My Astronomy (where it all started)

This page is a copy of information from my first web site.

My interest in Astronomy started when I was 11 years old, when my science teacher, at that time, taught me about the universe. Ever since, I have been interested in Astronomy. I started out with Space Travel and as I got older shifted over to astronomy. I'm more of a practical than an armchair astronomer, meaning I would rather visually observe astronomical events than read what Cosmologists say about it. I bought my first small telescope in 1986, at the time Halley's Comet came around. I have tried out many things like observing grazing/lunar/minor planet occultation, variable stars, satellite observation, astrophotography and many more. I also built my own CCD camera based on The CCD Cookbook.

Milky Way Center

This image of the Milky Way center is one of my first long exposure images I took. With the camera mounted on top of my telescope, I manually tracked a star, using high magnification, for 20 min, August 1987. The film I used was Konica 100 ASA.

Milky Way Center

Another Milky Way center image, also 20min exposure time but this time using a slide film (Fujichrome 400 ASA). Lens 28mm.

Eta Carinae nebula, Coalsack dark nebula and Southern Cross.

This photo of the region around the Eta Carinae nebula was taken on 1 April 1989 at about 22h43 UT using a 50 mm lens at f/5.6 with an exposure time of 20 min 35 sec.   The Coalsack dark nebula and the Southern Cross is on the left of the picture. Film Konica SR 1600.

Space Shuttle Atlantis.

This photo of the Space Shuttle Atlantis, passing North of the star Canopus and the false cross, was taken on 7 April 1991 at about 17h00 UT using a 28 mm lens at f/2.8 with an exposure time of about 2 min. Film; Konica SR-G400.

Space Shuttle Atlantis and the Gamma Ray Observatory satellite.

This photo of the Space Shuttle Atlantis (top) and the Gamma Ray Observatory satellite, going down in the east, was taken on 9 April 1991 at about 16h44 UT using a 50 mm lens at f/1.9. Note the constellation Corvus on the left of the Shuttle: Film; Konica SR-G400.

The Moon and Planets

This photo was taken on 15 June 1991 of the Moon and three planets namely; Jupiter, Mars and Venus. Time 17h00 UT using a 50 mm lens at f/2.8 and a exposure time of 12 sec.Film Fuji Super HG 400

The Moon

This black and white photo is my first picture I took of the moon. I used my 4.5 inch FL 900mm telescope with the film at prime focus. I think the film I used was Ilford ASA? .

The Moon

Using eyepies projection I took this picture of the Moon through my 4.5 inch FL 900mm telescope.

The Moon

Again using eyepies projection I took this picture of the Moon through a larger, 12 inch f/10 reflecting, telescope. The eyepies was a 16mm and the lens on the camera a 50mm . Exposure time 1/30 sec with Kodak 200 ASA.

Comet Hyakutake

This picture of Comet Hyakutake was taken on 23 March 1996 using a 135mm lens at f2.8 and a exposure time of 8 min. The film I used was Fujichrome 400.

Comet Hyakutake

On the same date, as the picture above, I took this image using a 28mm lens at f 2.8 with a 5 min exposure time.

Comet Hale-Bopp

Using my home build CCD camera I took this image of Comet Hale-Bopp on 25 May 1996 by "adding" 5 images of 15 sec each to obtain the final result. The telescope I used was a 4.5 inch f 7.8 reflecting telescope.

Comet Schwassmann-Wachmann 3

Using my home build CCD camera I took these images of Comet Schwassmann - Wachmann3 on 21 and 28 October 1995. On the left is the original black&white and on the right the false colour image. The telescope I used was a 4.5 inch f 7.8 reflecting telescope.

Pluto

Using my home build CCD camera I took these two images of Pluto using my small telescope on 29 and 30 July 1995.  The final images was obtained by "adding" 6 images of 15 sec each.

Minor Planet 492 (Gismonda)

Using my home build CCD camera I took these sequence of images showing the movement of Minor Planet, Gismonda approaching the star SAO 164197 (from the upper left) on 28 and 29 July 1995. On this particular day it was prediction that the minor planet was going to occult with the star but in turn out to be a miss in South Africa.
